Lido island

The Lido di Venezia is a long, narrow island that acts as a barrier between the Venetian Lagoon and the Adriatic sea. Much of the island is taken up by 19th and 20th Century villas, some of which have been converted to hotels. The well-groomed beaches cater for the summer holiday crowds and many luxury hotels are found on the side that faces the Adriatic. Motor vehicles are permitted on the Lido, which is served by a car ferry from Tronchetto.

The main street after the boat station of Santa Maria Elisabetta leads to the famous Lido beach where Venetians go for a seaside break away from the crowded city. The public beach has bathhouses for day visitors and residents. Walking along it you can reach many clubs and resorts. At the famous Excelsior resort one finds the Casinò and the Palazzo del Cinema, the venue for the renowned Venice International Film Festival.
