Grand canal

The Grand Canal is the biggest canal of Venice, this great 'road of water' is the also the most beautiful “street” in Venice, dividing the city in two. It is 4 kilometres long and travels not in a straight line, but rather curves in an “S” shape through the city. There are three big bridges that cross it ( Accademia, Scalzi and Rialto), these offer to the visitor views of the most interesting palaces emerging from the water. On the first Sunday of September- the occasion of the historic race- one can see the entire Grand Canal bedecked with flags and banners, all the people stand on the main bridges waiting for the procession of the traditional oars boats with people in period costume.
