San Pietro di Castello

In the past S. Pietro di Castello was the seat of the first Bishop of Venice from 775, later becoming, in 1451, the Seat of the Patriarch. It remained so until 1807 when this title was transferred to the Basilica of S. Marco. Inside the church one can find an ornate marble seat decorated in an Islamic style, together with frescoes attributed to Pietro Ricchi. The High Altar is by Clemente Moli and the altarpiece, depicting The Virgin and Child with Repenting Souls, is the work of Luca Giordano.
