This is the most beautiful opera house in Venice. It is also one of the most famous theatres in Europe, and the site where many famous operatic premieres have taken place. The name of the theatre reflects its history. The opera company for which it is a home has had to literally "rise from the ashes" after losing the use of two previous theatres (due to fire and legal problems respectively). Since opening and being named La Fenice, it has twice burned and been rebuilt.
