This event was initiated on November 11, 1974 when a group of Venetians sharing a passionate interest in rowing, the lagoon and the traditions of the “Serenissima”, got together on the island of Burano for the first race in a unique “regatta”. The Vogalonga was a race in which any type of rowing boat could participate. It would be an invitation to the city authorities and citizens to act against the decline of the city, and against the destructive waves caused by motor boats, by renewing interest in traditional Venetian festivities and activities.
