Venice
masks
The
Venice Carnival is the most internationally
known festival celebrated in Venice. It is
also one of the oldest carnivals in the world,
begun in the 15th century. Traditionally carnival
time in Venice has been a time during which
every excess was permitted. During the festivities
masks were worn by all- whilst protecting the
identity of debauchers these also seemed to
abolish all social division.
Today the tradition continues and for eight days before Lent each winter, tourists
flood the city for an orgy of pageants, commedia dell' arte, concerts, balls,
and masked exhibitionism, until Shrove Tuesday signals an end to the party. The
best way to enjoy Carnival time is of course to wear a mask and become a real
part of the action.
